End of Quarter Summary

It’s the end of the quarter and thus a good time to review progress. At the beginning of the quarter we modified rulang-bridge to work with complex erlang queries. The initial release was done during the first week and stabilized during the second and third weeks. For the second review we prepared the deployment features including space on rubyforge and a config for hoe which makes releases easy. Finally, in the last review we introduced much improved stability and a deployment strategy for linux and os x.

Review and New Direction

I was pleased with the progress of the project this quarter and I’m extremely excited about where it’ll go during the next quarter. Many of the preliminary features have been completed and we’re at a dividing point where we can either build an ActiveRecord adaptor for Ruby on Rails or work with making the rbridge server more deployable for people who want to use it. Right now it feels like a better idea to work on the AR adaptor to get mass approval. We are almost exactly on target with the original proposal though the order of events was different than planned.

So far the project has been simultaneously stressful and wonderful. When I released the gem initially it was well received by the community and I’ve never had so many people visit my blog. So far 45 people have downloaded the gem and hopefully they found it useful. The new gem released today should make their work much easier.

But at the same time the project has been stressful. Some elements haven’t presented themselves in the way I had hoped and I feel impotent when it comes to the Windows version of the project. Testing has been minimal but homework has always come before the little details of the project and I’ve felt that a complete test suite would only be used by an extremely limited base of people. But it’s been wonderful and I’m constantly filled with love for the Ruby community.

Original Proposal (Condensed)

  • Review 1: Build test suite, start programming bridge.
  • Review 2: Initial build, space on rubyforge.
  • Review 3: First gem released to the wild.
